Born and raised in Dorset, I grew up immersed in wildlife and the countryside. This became the focus of my creative interests and sparked a lifelong passion for the natural world.
My professional life has been in the music industry, working for major record labels with a diverse roster of UK and international artists. While this took me in a different creative direction for many years, my connection with nature remained constant and eventually brought me back to art. With little formal training, my work has developed through observation, trial and error, and perseverance.
I use graphite and coloured pencils, which allow me to build tone, texture and fine detail gradually through layered mark-making. Polychromos give controlled, crisp line work, while Luminance are more painterly, with a softer, richer laydown. I focus on physical form and small details — the texture of feathers, the patterns in fur, subtle expressions and posture.
Alongside wildlife subjects, I take commissioned portraits of children and dogs. I enjoy the process of capturing a true likeness and a sense of character. I will often meet my subjects to take reference photographs but when this isn't possible I work from a range of the customer's photographs to ensure a faithful and personal result.
I live in a quiet corner of South West London, surrounded by green spaces. Time spent in nature is essential to me - whether I'm walking in the wild beauty of Richmond Park, across the Dorset countryside or along the breathtaking Jurassic coastline. The wildlife I encounter is a great source of inspiration - I never tire of spotting a fox slipping through the ferns or catching the sudden turquoise flash of a kingfisher darting along the river. My drawings reflect these observations and experiences.
